What is peer support?

Peer support from a Certified Peer Supporter is the experience of receiving encouragement and understanding about your mental health and its challenges by someone who’s been there in their own life. A Certified Peer Supporter has personal experience in the mental health system and in dealing with their own mental health challenges or illness. Someone certified as a peer supporter has additional training in techniques that will help you in your self-determined exploration the most. Peer support is a mutual confidential and beneficial conversation in mental health terms where your self-determination is key. It is unbiased and without judgement and can provide a range of experiences from validation to advocacy. It can be a resource exploration and a teamwork toward your goals. Peer support isn’t advice or agenda based and works to re-light the spark of your power.

What else is peer support?

A peer supporter offers emotional, social, and practical support in various aspects of life and mental health. Peer support can contribute to overall well-being and quality of life when you are facing a mental health challenge, transition, or illness. It can be valuable for promoting your emotional well-being and reduce feelings of isolation. A send of community can be a gain.
